The AP Chinese course assumes that students already have the ability to carry on everyday conversations, read short passages and independently write compositions of approximately 150 Chinese characters. Students with no prior Chinese background are advised to first take our Chinese as a Second Language (CSL) program before considering AP Chinese.<\/p>\n<p>For native Chinese speakers or students who use Chinese at home, AP Chinese is generally considered to be of low to moderate difficulty. The course focuses on the four fundamental language skills\u2014listening, speaking, reading, and writing. All these cover topics related to daily life and Chinese culture. It does not involve Chinese literature or advanced academic writing.<\/p>\n<p>For non-Chinese students or those with no prior Chinese background, the course can be significantly more challenging, as it assumes students already possess basic communication skills in Chinese.<\/p>\n<p>The amount of time required outside of class varies by student.
