The Chinese Academy offers AP Chinese preparation courses but does not administer the AP Chinese Exam. Students must register for the exam through their English high school.
  1. Can students with no prior Chinese background enroll directly in AP Chinese? How difficult is the AP Chinese course? How much study time is required outside class?

It is not recommended. The AP Chinese course assumes that students already have the ability to carry on everyday conversations, read short passages and independently write compositions of approximately 150 Chinese characters. Students with no prior Chinese background are advised to first take our Chinese as a Second Language (CSL) program before considering AP Chinese.

For native Chinese speakers or students who use Chinese at home, AP Chinese is generally considered to be of low to moderate difficulty. The course focuses on the four fundamental language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing. All these cover topics related to daily life and Chinese culture. It does not involve Chinese literature or advanced academic writing.

For non-Chinese students or those with no prior Chinese background, the course can be significantly more challenging, as it assumes students already possess basic communication skills in Chinese.

The amount of time required outside of class varies by student. As a general guideline, students should expect to spend approximately 3–8 hours per week on coursework and review.

  1. How are AP Chinese course grades reported? Will they appear on my child’s English school transcript or Alberta Education transcript?

At the end of each school year, TCA will email students their report cards.

Chinese course grades from TCA will not appear in the student’s English school’s reporting system. However, they will appear on the official Alberta Education transcript.

Each June, TCA submits student grades to Alberta Education. High school students can view their Chinese course grades and credits through their MyPass account.

  1. Can students use The Chinese Academy grades when applying to university? How can we ensure the Chinese credits and grades are properly recognized? Do we need to request a separate transcript?

Yes. Chinese course grades from TCA, including AP Chinese preparation course grades, can be used for university applications.

Universities will see the final Chinese course grades on the student’s official Alberta transcript. Therefore, students generally do not need to request a separate transcript from TCA for university admission purposes.

However, if you would like a school-issued grade verification letter for personal reference or as supplementary documentation, you may request an official Chinese Course Grade Certification Letter from the school office.

An administrative fee of $10 applies.

  1. Regarding the AP Chinese Exam, do students need to request that the College Board send AP scores directly to universities?

Yes.

AP exam scores are managed entirely by the College Board and do not automatically appear on Alberta Education transcripts.

To ensure universities receive your child’s AP exam results, you must log into your College Board account and request that scores be sent directly to each university.

Please note that:

  • Course grades submitted to Alberta Education and
  • AP exam scores managed by the College Board

are two separate components and must be reported through their respective systems.

  1. If a student does not take the AP Chinese Exam, can they still receive high school credits for the AP Chinese course?

The AP Chinese Exam is a separate and optional component that is distinct from the Alberta Chinese course credits.

To receive credit for the AP Chinese course, students must take the College Board AP Chinese Language and Culture Exam. Students who do not take the AP Exam will not receive AP Chinese course credit.

However, Alberta Chinese course grades are separate from the AP Chinese course and examination. As long as students complete and participate in the examinations administered by our school, their Chinese course grades will be reported to Alberta Education and will appear on their official Alberta transcript.

In other words, the AP Chinese Exam and the Alberta Chinese course assessments serve different purposes and are evaluated separately.

  1. How do AP Chinese course credits count toward high school graduation requirements?

Students who successfully complete Alberta Chinese Academy’s AP Chinese course will earn 5 high school credits per academic year.

These credits count toward Alberta’s high school graduation requirement of 100 total credits and carry the same value as credits earned in any other approved high school course.

  1. How can AP Chinese courses and exam results benefit students who plan to continue studying Chinese at university?

AP Chinese coursework and AP exam results may help students:

  • Earn University Credits

Many universities grant credit or course exemptions for introductory or intermediate Chinese courses when students achieve a score of 4 or 5 on the AP Chinese Exam.

  • Skip Introductory Courses

Students may be eligible to enroll directly in higher-level Chinese courses.

  • Demonstrate Language Proficiency

AP Chinese achievements can strengthen university applications by providing evidence of academic achievement and advanced language proficiency.

Because AP credit recognition policies vary by institution, families are encouraged to review the AP credit policies of their target universities in advance.

  1. Will a poor AP score negatively affect university admissions?

The impact is generally very limited for the following reasons:

  • AP exam scores are optional to submit. If a student receives a lower score on the AP Chinese Exam (for example, below a 3), they may choose not to report that score to universities.
  • Taking the AP course itself still demonstrates academic initiative. Having AP Chinese listed on a transcript shows that a student was willing to challenge themselves with a more rigorous course. Universities generally view this positively, and an average AP exam result typically does not outweigh the value of having completed the course.

In most cases, course selection, overall academic performance, and extracurricular involvement carry greater weight in the admissions process than a single AP exam score.
